Intuit has just announced the release of QuickBooks for Mac 2020. Initially this product will be rolled out to QuickBooks ProAdvisors with an Enterprise Software Bundle (that includes a license for QuickBooks for Mac). Not long after, current QuickBooks for Mac users will begin being notified about the availability of the initial release of the software (should they wish to purchase an upgrade for download). Soon thereafter, QuickBooks for Mac 2020 versions will begin appearing on retailers' shelves.
Insightful Accountant has had communications with Intuit personnel, including product managers and developers, concerning the new features so we can give you a glimpse into the new version. This article provides a synopsis of those features. This year I decided to post this QuickBooks for Mac summary separate from my 2020 QuickBooks (for Windows) Summarybecause I realize that most of our readers who ‘do Mac’ don’t have any interest regarding the Windows versions, or vice versa.
Insightful Accountant will however be including QuickBooks for Mac in our SeptemberQB Talks webinar scheduled for 2 PM Eastern on September 18, 2019 when we discuss all of the QuickBooks 2020 versions, so you may want to tune in for that webinar even though it does contain ‘Windows’ versions (sorry), there will be more information about that webinar in a future article. You can register HERE.
The New Look
Probably the biggest and brightest, or perhaps ‘darkest’ (depending on your perspective) change in my way of thinking is QuickBooks for Mac has ‘gone dark’ with compatibility to use the Dark Mode user interface found in the Mojave Operating System. It certainly gives QuickBooks for Mac an entirely different look that many QB-Mac users have been asking for.

Upload text searchable images from your iPhone/iPad to QuickBooks for Mac
QB-Mac-2020_iPhone2Mac_01_4x3-R
Most Apple lovers are indeed ‘Apple lovers’ that means they not only love their Macs they love their iPhones as well, and so they want they two of them to work together and that’s true even when it comes to QuickBooks. Well for 2020 these Apple lovers can now upload text searchable images from their iPhone cameras to QuickBooks for Mac. You can also add these images to your QuickBooks transactions via the ‘Attachments Center’ as long as you have everything set-up properly.
In order to use this feature the following configuration and settings must be operational: (1) you must be using the Mojave MacOS, (2) your iPhone must be using iOS 12 (or higher), (3) your Mac and iPhone must be on the same WIFI network or must be connected via Bluetooth, (4) you must be signed into iCloud on both your Mac and iPhone, (5) and you must have enabled two-factor identification.
When you take a Phone, say of a receipt, and press photo the phone will be saved in the QuickBooks Attachment Center. From there you can attach it to any document.

You can then right-click in the empty space and select New Simple Volume to create a partition and format it with the Windows NTFS or FAT32 file systems. The Mac drive may have an “EFI System Partition” on it. If you have an external hard drive or USB flash drive that you’d like to use on both Macs and Windows PCs, choosing the right file system to format the drive can be confusing. ×User your iPhone camera to quickly scan in photographed bills, receipts, invoices, or other forms, then search them easily with new QB for Mac search features
As an alternative you can add attachments directly from a transaction by clicking on attachments, then clicking on the plus icon and selecting either your iPhone or iPad, then click on either scan docs or take photo for the appropriate device to open the camera on the device, when you press photo it will be saved as an attachment directly to that transaction.
By the way, this process uses OCR when attaching documents so as to make them searchable which is the next new feature.
Improved Search of Attached Images
Significant improvements have been made in the ability to search scanned PDF attachments for text. Because the new process is reliant upon the OCR being when attaching documents, they should be as high a resolution with a high a contrast as possible to make searching easier to insure that you find the information you are seeking.
×QuickBooks for Mac 2020 has enhanced text searchable image scanning, search scanned PDF images for specific text using integrated OCR functionality.
Note, if you are using either scanned images of, or searching for scanned images of Intuit Online Payroll documents, you must have Adobe Acrobat available, and Adobe Acrobat license is not included with your QuickBooks for Mac license.
Reporting Modernization
I remember several years back QuickBooks for Mac supposedly enhanced their reporting capabilities and the general consensus was that “they made it more like QuickBooks for Windows” when Mac users had hoped they would make it more like typical Mac reporting tools Numbers, or even 3rd party tools likes today’s Domo or Looker. Now we have another revision they are calling a ‘Modernization’ that promises improved customization, usability, presentation and navigation. Since I am not a regular QuickBooks for Mac user, I am not a good judge of these changes, you will need to decide for yourself.
So, let’s start by taking a look at the interface… one of the first things you will notice is that there are 3 tabs: options, filters and format. In detail reports you can search by the available columns.
×Modernized reporting with improved customization and real-time updates that show changes automatically
By the way, reports are self-refreshing now which means that they show changes to your data in real-time automatically.
The filters tab provides another location by which you can easily search for information you are needing, then build your report to express your report results.
×QuickBooks for Mac Modernized Reports mean refreshed reporting structure affording greater usability, easier navigation and better appearing presentation(s).
With the ‘format’ tab you can easily create customize reports by selecting and modifying the format style you want, and then saving your customizations to fonts or other design elements as a new custom format setup.
×The modernized reporting found in QuickBooks for Mac 2020 affords greater customization and formatting than ever before. Save your designs and use them over and over with your own customer format style.
So, you tell me, is this the kind of reporting modernization you have been looking for, or are you still expecting more from QuickBooks for Mac when it comes to reporting? Let us know by posting a reply in the comments below, we will pass them along to Intuit's QuickBooks for Mac Development Team.
Invoice e-Payments

You also have the option of charging your customer a fee for having to deal with their NSF check.
You begin this process by locating the Customer Payment for which the NSF check was received and click the new 'Bounced Check'.
×For 2020 QuickBooks for Mac has a new Bounced Check feature that provides an efficient way to deal with NSF checks you have received as payments from a Customer.

×QB-Mac for 2020 does the work for you of properly posting all fees and reversing Customer payments when you experience a bounced check.

In this example you wills see that QuickBooks will mark 2 previously paid invoices now as 'unpaid', post a previously deposited check in your checking account as 'returned', post a new 'bank service' fee for the NSF, and create a new Invoice to the customer for your NSF Charge for handling the bounced check.

QuickBooks products are geared mainly toward small and medium-sized businesses and offer on-premises accounting applications as well as cloud-based versions that accept business payments, manage and pay bills, and payroll functions.

History[edit]
Intuit was founded in 1983 by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx in Mountain View, California, USA. After the success of Quicken for individual financial management, the company developed similar services for small business owners.
Initial release[edit]
The initial Quicken software did not function as a 'double-entry' accounting package. The initial release of QuickBooks was the DOS version that was based on the Quicken codebase. The Windows and Mac versions shared a different codebase that was based on In-House Accountant, which Intuit had acquired. The software was popular among small business owners who had no formal accounting training. As such, the software soon claimed up to 85 percent of the small business accounting software market. It continues to command the vast majority of this market.[2] Professional accountants, however, were not satisfied with early versions of the system, citing poor security controls, such as no audit trail, as well as non-conformity with traditional accounting standards.
Subsequent releases[edit]
Intuit sought to bridge the gap with these accounting professionals, eventually providing full audit trail capabilities, double-entry accounting functions and increased functions. By 2000, Intuit had developed Basic and Pro versions of the software and, in 2003, started offering industry-specific versions, with workflow processes and reports designed for each of these business types along with terminology associated with the trades.
Options now include versions for manufacturers, wholesalers, professional service firms, contractors, non-profit entities[3] and retailers, in addition to one specifically designed for professional accounting firms who service multiple small business clients. In May 2002 Intuit launched QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions for medium-sized businesses.
In September 2005, QuickBooks had 74% of the market in the US.[4] A June 19, 2008 Intuit Press Release said that as of March 2008, QuickBooks' share of retail units in the business accounting category reached 94.2 percent, according to NPD Group. It also says that more than 50,000 accountants, CPAs and independent business consultants are members of the QuickBooks ProAdvisor program.[5] By then Brad Smith was the new CEO, though former CEO Steve Bennett had nearly tripled Intuit revenue and quadrupled earnings in eight years.[6]
On September 22, 2014, Intuit announced the release of QuickBooks 2015 with features that users have been requesting from the past versions. Improved income tracker, pinned notes, improved registration process and insights on homepage are some of the general changes for all versions of QuickBooks 2015.[7]
In September 2015, Intuit released QuickBooks 2016 that contains several improvements to the existing ones and new features such as batch transaction, bill tracking, continuous feed label printer support, batch delete/void transactions etc.[8]
In September 2016, Intuit released QuickBooks 2017 with several improvements like automated reports, smart search and improved viewing of report filters among other things.[9]
In September 2017, Intuit released QuickBooks 2018 with updated features and added a few more to the list like multi-monitor support, cash/accrual toggle, past due stamp, inventory reports, webmail enhancements, merge duplicate vendors (for Premier edition), mobile inventory barcode scanning, inventory picking option, along with improved sales order management for Enterprise edition. [1]
In September 2018, Intuit released QuickBooks 2019 that included a variety of improved and new features to help the clients get more done with ease. These updates include easy access to payment services, seamless transfer of customer credits, easy version upgrades, easy link checks to open bills accurately, consolidated data file optimization, and the option to reduce the company file size without deleting existing data. [2]
On September 16, 2019, Intuit released QuickBooks 2020 to magnify the usability, accuracy, and customer experience by including some new and updated features. These features include Auto-Scheduled Payment Reminders, option to add PO number in the email subject line of the invoice, easy search files option in a click, direct deposit option, and more. [3]
International versions[edit]
Versions of this product are available in many different markets. Intuit's Canadian, British and Australian divisions offer versions of QuickBooks that support the unique tax calculation needs of each region, such as Canada's GST, HST or PST sales tax, European VAT for the United Kingdom edition and Australia's GST[10] sales tax. The QuickBooks UK edition also includes support for Irish and South African VAT. QuickBooks Enterprise was withdrawn from the UKI market in 2014.
QuickBooks Desktop is only available on a rental / subscription basis for users in UK and Ireland.
The Mac (OSX) version is available only in the United States.
Features[edit]
Intuit has integrated several web-based features into QuickBooks, including remote access capabilities, remote payroll assistance and outsourcing, electronic payment functions, online banking and reconciliation, mapping features through integration with Google Maps, marketing options through Google, and improved e-mail functionality through Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. For the 2008 version, the company has also added import from Excelspreadsheets, additional employee time tracking options, pre-authorization of electronic funds and new Help functions. In June 2007, Intuit announced that QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions would run on Linux servers, whereas previously it required a Windows server to run.[11]
QuickBooks Online[edit]
Intuit also offers a cloud service called QuickBooks Online (QBO). The user pays a monthly subscription fee rather than an upfront fee and accesses the software exclusively through a secure logon via a Web browser. Intuit provides patches, and regularly upgrades the software automatically, but also includes pop-up ads within the application for additional paid services.
As of May 2014, QuickBooks Online had the most subscribers for an online accounting platform, with 624,000 subscribers.[12] compared to Xero, which reported 284,000 customers as of July 2014.[13]
The cloud version is a distinct product from the desktop version of QuickBooks, and has many features that work differently than they do in desktop versions.[14]
In 2013, Intuit announced that it had rebuilt QuickBooks Online 'from the ground up' with a platform that allows third parties to create small business applications and gives customers the ability to customize the online version of QuickBooks.[15]
QuickBooks Online is supported on Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 10, Safari 6.1, and also accessible via Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS 7.[16][17] One may also access QuickBooks Online via an iPhone, a BlackBerry, and an Android web app.[18][19]
In 2011, Intuit introduced a UK-specific version of QuickBooks Online to address the specific VAT and European tax system. There are also customized versions of QuickBooks for India, Canadian, and Australian markets, as well as a global version that can be customized by the user.[20]
Quickbooks Online offers integration with other third-party software and financial services, such as banks, payroll companies, and expense management software.[citation needed]
QuickBooks Point of Sale[edit]
QuickBooks Point of Sale is software that replaces a retailer's cash register, tracks its inventory, sales, and customer information, and provides reports for managing its business and serving its customers.
Add-on programs[edit]
Through the Solutions Marketplace, Intuit encouraged third-party software developers to create programs that fill niche areas for specific industries and integrate with QuickBooks. Intuit partnered with Lighter Capital to create a $15 million fund for developers designing apps for Intuit Quickbooks.[21] The Intuit Developer Network provides marketing and technical resources, including software development kits (SDKs).
Intuit's Lacerte and ProLine tax preparation software for professional accountants who prepare tax returns for a living integrates with QuickBooks in this way. Microsoft Office also integrates with QuickBooks.
Criticism[edit]
As of November 2014, users of QuickBooks for OSX have reported compatibility issues with Apple's new operating system, OS X Yosemite.[22]
